Mwala Cluster Water Supply Project
The Mwala Cluster Water Supply Project, funded jointly by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program (KTSWSSP) at a cost of Kshs 1.7 Billion, aims to meet the increasing demand for clean drinking water in Mwala, Makutano, Masii, Kabaa, and Mbiuni, benefiting a population of approximately 270,000.
The project main components includes the construction of a 3.5m high weir on the Ndarugu River at Munyu, laying 4.48 km of raw water gravity mains, constructing a 6,600 m³/day water treatment plant with a 1,000 m³ clear water storage tank, and laying of 80 km transmission and distribution network.
The project has faced delays in the implementation due to non perfomance of the previous contractor leading to termination and re advertisement for works contractor.
Currently the project completion rate is 33% and an expected to be completed by December 2025.
1.2 Machakos Water Supply
The Machakos water supply project, under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program (KTSWSSP) and funded jointly by the Government of Kenya and African Development Bank (AfDB) at a cost of Kshs 1.266 Billion, aims to provide sustainable water supply services to approximately 250,000 residents within Machakos Town and its environs.
Key works include the construction of the 15m high Miwongoni embankment, raw water mains, new treatment works, and storage tanks, along with the development and rehabilitation of boreholes and pipelines, rehabilitation of the Maruba Dam Water Treatment Works, and the planting of trees around the dam for environmental conservation.
The project has faced delays in the implementation due to challenges related to acqusition of land for the Miwongoni Dam.
Currently the project completion rate is 73% and an expected to be completed by December 2025.
1.3 Machakos Sewerage Project
The Machakos Sewerage project, under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program (KTSWSSP) and funded jointly by the Government of Kenya and African Development Bank (AfDB) at a cost of Kshs 840 Million, aims to provide sewered sanitation services services to approximately 10,000 households within Machakos Town and its environs.
The project scope includes laying approximately 65 km of trunk and lateral sewer lines, constructing a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 12,500 m³/day at the Ikiwe River-Muvuti Road junction, and rehabilitating existing sewer networks. Additionally, four sanitation blocks will be built, a sewer exhauster truck will be purchased, and 3,000 individual connections will be provided.
Currently the project completion rate is 89% and an expected to be completed by July 2025.
